Customer loyalty is one of the most valuable assets a retailer can possess, so it's no surprise that companies leading in this metric are also among the most successful retailers in the world. The 2012 Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Index ranks Walmart, Walgreens, Amazon.com, Office Depot, Abercrombie & Fitch and Ace Hardware among those that have earned consumers' loyalty by creating "customer delight."

The Customer Loyalty Index is based on Brand Keys' 2012 survey of 49,000 adult consumers who self-select for the categories in which they are consumers. The retail category includes 47 brands divided into nine vertical categories; following are the loyalty winners for each category:

Athletic footwear: Asics
Drugstores: Walgreens
Online retailers: Amazon.com
Retail store (apparel): Abercrombie & Fitch
Retail store (department): Dillard's
Retail store (discount): Walmart
Retail store (home improvement): Ace Hardware
Retail store (office supply): Office Depot
Retail store (price club): Costco
